Module 12/Lesson 3 of 3
Sample Knowledge Test
Practice questions that demonstrate the format and difficulty of the G1 knowledge test.
About the Knowledge Test
The practice questions below show you the style and feel of what awaits on the G1 knowledge test, and are kept up to date with the latest changes to Ontario's official MTO Driver's Handbook. Every question on the knowledge test uses a multiple-choice format. Use these to gauge your readiness and identify areas where you need more study.
Question 1: Getting Out of a Skid
When your vehicle begins to skid, what is your first move?
A) Hold the wheel straight ahead
B) Turn the wheel against the direction of the skid
C) Steer toward where you want the vehicle to go (CORRECT)
D) Brake firmly
Why: As a skid starts, lift off the accelerator and aim the front of the car where you want it to head. Braking hard or steering the opposite way tends to make the skid worse.
Tip
During a skid, come off the pedals and steer toward your target. Expect to see this one on the G1 test -- it comes up often.
Question 2: Lending Your Driver's Licence
Under what circumstances are you allowed to lend out your driver's licence?
A) During an emergency
B) To someone who is learning to drive
C) Never -- it is not allowed (CORRECT)
D) When it's needed as identification
Why: Handing your driver's licence to another person is illegal, no matter the reason. The licence is a personal legal document tied to you alone.
Question 3: Entering a Highway from a Private Road
Before pulling onto a highway from a driveway or private road, what is the driver required to do?
A) Get onto or across the highway as fast as possible
B) Give the right-of-way to every vehicle coming along the highway (CORRECT)
C) Honk the horn and ease out carefully
D) Make a hand signal, then claim the right-of-way
Why: Coming out of a driveway or private road onto a highway, you have to let all the traffic already travelling on it go first.
Question 4: Changing Lanes
You should never switch lanes in traffic unless you have first:
A) Glanced only at the rear-view mirror
B) Signalled properly and confirmed the move can be made safely (CORRECT)
C) Sounded the horn and looked behind you
D) Slowed down and signalled correctly
Why: Ahead of any lane change, you need to signal what you intend to do and verify it's safe by checking your mirrors and your blind spot.
Question 5: Being Passed by Another Vehicle
Another driver is preparing to overtake and pass you. What should you do?
A) Accelerate so they no longer need to pass
B) Pull to the left to block the pass
C) Wave the other driver off from passing
D) Ease to the right and let that vehicle go by (CORRECT)
Why: As you're being overtaken, move right and give the other vehicle room to pass safely. Don't speed up or try to stop the pass.
Question 6: Making a U-Turn
As you weigh whether to make a U-turn, the very first thing you should check is the:
A) Traffic regulations (CORRECT)
B) Trees, fire hydrants, or poles sitting near the curb
C) Turning radius of your car
D) Height of the curb
Why: Your first step before any U-turn is to confirm it's legal where you are. Plenty of intersections and roads don't allow them.
Question 7: Driving at Night
Driving at the top posted speed is riskier after dark than in daylight chiefly because:
A) Your reactions are slower once it's dark
B) Your view ahead is shorter at night (CORRECT)
C) Some drivers illegally use parking lights alone
D) Roads tend to get slipperier at night
Why: After dark, even your headlights don't reach as far as daylight does. Travel at the maximum speed and you risk overdriving those headlights.
Question 8: Safe Driving Speed
Whatever the conditions, you should keep to a speed that lets you:
A) Come to a stop inside 150 metres (500 feet)
B) Come to a stop inside 90 metres (300 feet)
C) Come to a stop inside 60 metres (200 feet)
D) Come to a stop within a safe distance (CORRECT)
Why: No single stopping distance works for every situation. Always pick a speed from which you can stop safely given the road, the weather, and the traffic at that moment.
Test-Taking Tips
The G1 knowledge test is made up of 40 multiple-choice questions, split into two parts:
- 20 about road signs
- 20 about the rules of the road
To pass, you must answer at least 16 right in each part -- that's 80%.
Study tips:
- Work through every chapter of this guide, which tracks the latest changes to Ontario's official MTO Driver's Handbook
- Give extra focus to the exact figures: speeds, distances, fines, demerit points, and BAC levels
- Memorize the shape and colour of each sign category (regulatory, warning, temporary, information)
- Get comfortable with right-of-way rules across every kind of intersection
- Learn the rules covering school buses, emergency vehicles, and pedestrian crossovers
- Go back over the sample questions and make sure you grasp WHY each correct answer is right
Tip
There are 40 questions on the G1 test -- 20 on signs and 20 on rules. Passing means hitting at least 80% (16 of 20) in EACH part.
Key takeaways
- In a skid, aim the vehicle toward your target -- never brake hard or turn against the slide
- Lending your driver's licence is never allowed
- Coming out of a private road or driveway, let all highway traffic go first
- Before any lane change, both signal and confirm it's safe using your mirrors and blind spot
- While being overtaken, ease right -- don't accelerate or try to block the pass
- Your first U-turn check is whether the law permits one where you are
- Night driving carries more risk because your view ahead is shorter even with headlights on
- Choose a speed you can stop from safely given the conditions at the time
- The G1 test runs 40 questions (20 signs + 20 rules), with 80% needed in each part to pass
